 Intended Learning Outcomes

After this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • locate and view the iSpace gradebook for their courses;
  • create and manage the categories, items, and weightings in the iSpace gradebook;
  • configure and share specific information about course performance with students;
  • analyze and record student performance and learning behavior via the iSpace LMS.

Synopsis

How do you record your students’ assessments? How do you give feedback to your students about their performance in class? Where can you and your students come together to monitor and improve course engagement and achievement? The iSpace gradebook is for you! In this workshop, participants will be introduced to setting up and using the gradebook feature of UIC’s Learning Management System (LMS) to document students’ performance in their courses.

Those who are new to the iSpace gradebook will see how to use an existing course syllabus to create a usable gradebook based on the assessments listed in the syllabus. This online gradebook can be implemented immediately to record and organize student assessments. These records can be easily sorted, analyzed, and exported to Excel to make instructors’ lives easier. Students can also be allowed to see their marks as soon as they are ready and to keep track of how they are performing in the course throughout the term.

Those participants who are experienced iSpace users will be able to compare how they are implementing the gradebook with recommended practices. The concepts of grade category, grade item, and weighting will be presented to match the iSpace gradebook with assessment methods listed in a course syllabus. Creating iSpace activities with corresponding automatic entries in the gradebook will be demonstrated. The concept of formative assessment will also be revisited with a method for recording these measures of student performance without disrupting the official marks for students in a course.

If you are tired of struggling to remember where you last left your gradebook or which is the most current version of the file to update, this workshop is for you! Please bring one of your course syllabuses and join us in the LRC 2nd Floor Meeting Room on Wednesday, November 28 from 12:15-13:45 to see how the power of the iSpace gradebook can employed to best meet the needs of both you and your students. We look forward to your participation in this Teaching and Learning Workshop Series event! Light refreshments will be provided for participants who register in advance.
